Menard Family Center High School Civic Scholars Program
The Menard Family Center’s High School Civic Scholars brings together rising high school juniors and seniors from across the country for an immersive summer program on Miami’s Oxford campus. In the classroom ºÚÁÏÉçÇøs debate constitutional principles, participate in legislative simulations, and learn about techniques of effective civic engagement. The program is co-led by John Forren and Anne Whitesell.
Outside the classroom, the group also engaged in a wide variety of experiential learning activities, including two immersive workshops on the sources of and remedies for political polarization (presented by Braver Angels), conversations with Oxford city council members and city administrators, and field trips to regional sites.
As part of the High School Civic Scholars Program, ºÚÁÏÉçÇøs have visited:
- Oxford City Council
- U.S. District Court
- U.S. Court of Appeals
- National Underground Railroad Museum
- Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center
- Fernald Nature Preserve
- Ohio Statehouse
- Cincinnati TV station WLWT
Upon successful completion of their summer residential experience, participants are invited to join an extended cohort-based learning and mentoring experience, which includes up to six tuition-free credit hours of Miami courses and preferred access to selected Center-sponsored civic engagement events during the academic year.
