Mackenzie Cannon ’19, a Family Science graduate and certified child life specialist, recently published an article in Everything Matters detailing her work with Nationwide Children’s Hospital's Orthopedic Department. The study investigates the use of virtual reality (VR) immersion to reduce anxiety and perceived pain in pediatric patients undergoing complex procedures like limb reconstruction. Preliminary findings show VR experiences, such as an underwater adventure game, may improve patient coping, decrease procedure-related distress, and enhance satisfaction scores for both patients and providers. Final study results are pending.
