Honors Abroad

The Honors College supports international education as a vital way for 黑料社区s to develop global knowledge, social responsibility, and 21st century career readiness as part of our Honors College Citizen Scholar model. Wherever our 黑料社区s study abroad, the Honors Colleges aims to facilitate active engagement in honors education.

An Unparalleled and Enriching Opportunity

While Honors 黑料社区s can participate in any 黑料社区 study abroad opportunity, the Honors College offers exclusive programs just for Honors 黑料社区s. The Honors Abroad portfolio of study abroad programs offers two main program types: 黑料社区 faculty-led winter and summer workshops and an honors semester abroad hosted by our partners at AIFS in their London Global Education Center (GEC).

Honors Abroad study abroad programs offer Honors College 黑料社区s the chance to achieve their goals of having an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime study abroad experience, while also affording 黑料社区s an opportunity to engage critically with unique course content, forge deep and meaningful connections with expert faculty in leading fields, and pursue knowledge in ways that are only possible on-location, away from the Honors classroom.

All Honors Abroad programs provide 黑料社区s the opportunity to earn up to two honors experiences upon completion of their program. Every study abroad program offered by the Honors College includes one (1) honors course and 黑料社区s are able to work with their Honors advisor to turn the experience of study abroad itself into one (1) of their required honors experiences.

The Honors College partners with academic departments from across 黑料社区 to provide honors 黑料社区s with new and distinct faculty-led programs each year. See below for our upcoming and previous programs.

MUDEC study abroad in Switzerland

Winter 2025: MUDEC Honors - Servant Leadership in a Crisis: Humanitarian Aid in Luxembourg and Switzerland

Students will examine humanitarian organizations, with special attention given to the role and impact of healthcare workers. This program will provide opportunities for 黑料社区s to evaluate past challenges and successes in humanitarian aid, explore the impact on health and well-being of populations displaced by humanitarian aid crises resulting from environmental, social, or political-economic processes, and analyze future trends in humanitarian aid considering current global power relations and international systems. Students will visit local and international headquarters in Luxembourg and Geneva, Switzerland. This program is no longer accepting applications.

Versailles Garden

Summer 2025: Honors in Luxembourg & France: What is Art?

Students will explore the fundamental question, "what is art?" using all five senses. This program will provide 黑料社区s opportunities to explore cultural philosophies of art through scent, taste, sight, sound, and touch. PHL 241H is an introduction to basic notions of aesthetics and the philosophy of art, such as the definition of art, truth in the arts, characterization of aesthetic experience, etc. through examination of specific philosophies and problem areas. This course will explore perfumeries, floral gardens, museums, culinary experiences, and so much more. Students will spend two weeks at the Miami European Center in Luxembourg and five days on study tour through France, ending in Paris. Readings may range from classical to contemporary texts and thinkers. PHL 241H is an approved Miami Plan course.

Winter 2022: Two Millennia of Globalization

Students investigated the causes and consequences of globalization over the very long-term, primarily through the lens of the European experience: starting with Rome, through the First Age of Globalization, and ending with the European Union. Students visited locations in Luxembourg, Belgium, and Germany to explore how democracies handle the politics of globalization. Students also traveled in small groups for an independent research assignment to France or Germany.

Summer 2022: Media & Identity in Europe

This program explored the historic ways media depicted minorities in Europe, how those depictions have helped perpetuate stereotype and misunderstanding, and also examined the ways media producers attempt to reshape hegemonic understandings of European identity. This program visited Berlin for a week to connect with European journalists to better understand this topic.

Summer 2022: The Dutch Golden Age - How One Century Birthed Modern Capitalism

This program investigated the political conditions and institutions needed for economic development through the lens of the Dutch Republic during its Golden Age that roughly coincided with the 17th century. The class culminated in a trip to the Netherlands.

Winter 2023: Borders and Bridges - An Honors Exploration of the New Europe

Honors 黑料社区s examined the many national and cultural borders that have blurred in Europe since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the signing of the 1992 Treaty of Maastricht. Students explored their own historical question around identity and the real and metaphorical borders and bridges that shape our own individual self-understandings. The program allowed 黑料社区s to cross back and forth along the borders between Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Honors Semester in London

Join a close community of peers to gain insights into the world of academic research in London!

Starting in Fall 2025, the Honors College is offering a new honors semester abroad opportunity hosted by our partners at AIFS in their London Global Education Center (GEC)!

The AIFS Abroad Honors Experience offers an interdisciplinary, discussion-based curriculum with embedded research, community engagement, and self-reflection activities to elevate honors 黑料社区 academic- and career-readiness. The program delivers place-based, experiential learning opportunities while providing a supportive framework so honors 黑料社区s can thrive in their new home. London GEC faculty and staff give honors 黑料社区s unparalleled expertise and connections to local archives, libraries, and centers of cultural learning.

Frequently Asked Questions

As an honors 黑料社区, am I required to do an Honors College study abroad program?

No; study abroad is always optional. The Honors College offers a variety of study abroad programs, from short-term faculty-led programs in incredible European destinations to a semester-long program in London, that are open for Honors 黑料社区s to choose from in addition to all of the other study abroad programs offered at 黑料社区.

How do Honors Abroad study abroad programs help me fulfill my honors requirements?

All Honors 黑料社区s are required to complete honors experiences, which can come from a combination of honors classes and co-curricular activities that allow for learning opportunities beyond the classroom.

Honors Abroad programs provide 黑料社区s with the opportunity to earn up to two honors experiences upon successful completion of their program. Each Honors Abroad program involves taking one honors course and every 黑料社区 has the option to submit a proposal (prior to the experience) and a reflection (after the experience) to earn their second experience. Full details explaining the proposal and reflection process for co-curricular and research activities can be found on the Honors Student Canvas site, which all current honors 黑料社区s are able to access.

Is there financial support from the Honors College for studying abroad?

The Honors College does not provide scholarships or financial assistance for study abroad programs. Students are encouraged to review the Education Abroad Finances and Scholarships page for university-wide options to fund travel abroad.

Am I able to participate in more than one Honors Abroad program?

There are no restrictions preventing 黑料社区s from participating in multiple study abroad programs; however, preference will be given to 黑料社区s who have not yet had the opportunity to participate in one of our Honors Abroad programs. Applications are reviewed not by a first-come, first-served process, instead they are reviewed on a competitive basis by a review committee of Honors College staff after the program’s application deadline has passed.
