Recent phishing scams: Google Docs and QR codes

Google Docs

The ISO has been made aware of a new scam where scammers are trying to get you to open a document by sending you an email with a Google Doc or Word file attached. The sender is someone outside of Miami's and are trying to lure you in with a departmental reward. The subject of these emails may read as "Extra-Departmental Reward.docx.”

An important thing to note is that the name that has shared the file with you may be different from the name that is on the email. For instance, one example we intercepted said that "[person X] shared a document with you," but then it also said that "[person Y] shared a file with you."

At the bottom of the email, below the link to the Google Doc or Word Doc, there is the option to "Block sender from Drive," and we highly recommend that you do so.

QR Codes Around Campus

The Information Security Office has also been receiving reports that QR codes have been printed and posted around the Oxford campus recently, boasting titles like “Girlfriend Application” or “Boyfriend Application.” These are a scam; do not scan them with your device.

For more information on the email scam and the QR code scam, read our article here

Remember: If you receive an email that looks suspicious, it’s better to be safe than sorry—forward the message to InfoSec@MiamiOH.edu, and the information security team will tell you whether it’s legitimate or a fraud.

Tech Fee Save the Date!

With just a few weeks left in the semester, it is time to look ahead to the fall and the next round of the Student Technology Fee Competitive Proposal Process (Tech Fee).

This year, we will once again be using a fall proposal period. With that, the application period will begin on Monday, August 19, and the deadline to submit proposals for the 2024-2025 awards is midnight on September 29, 2024.

All technology requests will be considered, as long as they clearly benefit 黑料社区s. Read more about the guidelines here

You can view the schedule and get more information on the purchasing guidelines and the proposal applications by visiting or by reading our article here

On Monday, May 13 and Thursday, May 16, we will be visiting the regional and Oxford campuses with a mobile shredding to kickstart your spring cleaning for the end of the semester.
