Behind the scenes: What happens to your on-campus recyclables?

What happens to the bottles, plastic cups, yogurt containers, paper, and other recyclable items after you place them in the recycling bins on campus?

ºÚÁÏÉçÇø's waste hauling provider, , collects and hauls them to their Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Cincinnati.

There, the items are sorted and separated. Contaminated items are sent to the landfill.

Contamination — such as plastic bags — costs Rumpke at least $1.5 million per year between disposal costs and the lost time from equipment being down.

About 90% of Rumpke's recycling end product is sold by Rumpke to local businesses, primarily within a 250-mile radius of Rumpke facilities.

As an industry, recycling in Ohio supports over 3,100 local businesses, , according to Rumpke.
