Tax Filers - Preferred Method

The Direct Data Exchange (DDX) is a tool that allows you to consent for the exchange of federal tax information into your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The process enables the FAFSA to retrieve income and tax data directly from the IRS. This capability ensures the most accurate information is reported on the applicant’s FAFSA.

All FAFSA on the Web (FOTW) applicants who indicate they have filed a federal tax return will be directed to use the DDX.

FOTW applicants and parents who indicate they will file a federal tax return will receive an email directing them to use the DDX to update their income information once they have filed their federal tax return.

Benefits of Using the DDX

  • Applicants can complete their FAFSA more easily and accurately.
  • Financial aid awards will be more accurate.
  • Applicants selected for Federal Verification can use the tool to verify their income information, avoiding the requirement to submit their Tax Return to Miami for the Federal Verification review, which can cause processing delays and possible changes in aid.

Direct Data Exchange (DDX) Information

Availability of Data from the IRS

To allow time for data to be available from the IRS, applicants must wait the appropriate amount of time before being able to use the DDX on the FAFSA. The IRS has suggested the following, based on your tax filing method:

  • Electronic tax filers: within 2 weeks of filing taxes
  • Paper tax filers: within 6 to 8 weeks of filing taxes

DDX and Federal Verification

If your FAFSA is selected for Federal Verification, the requirement for verifying your and your parents’ (if applicable) tax return information will be satisfied when you use the DDX on your FAFSA. Please note: if you make any updates to your FAFSA’s tax information once the DDX has been used, you will be required to support your changes to us by sending a Federal tax return transcript or a signed Federal 1040. We advise applicants and parents to contact the One Stop with any questions in regard to reporting changes in income instead of making changes to their FAFSA once the DDX has been used.

Please do not send us your tax transcripts or 1040 unless you have been selected for Federal Verification and are unable to use the DDX. Read more about the process at our Federal Verification page.

Correct or Update Your FAFSA Form

As early as two weeks after filing taxes electronically (or six to eight weeks if filing paper), the applicant should be able utilize the DDX.

If you need to make a correction to your FAFSA:

  1. Log into your  account by selecting “Log In.”
  2. Select the “I am a 黑料社区 and want to access the FAFSA form” option.
  3. Enter your FSA ID.
  4. Select “Make Corrections.”

Visit StudentAid.gov’s page to learn more about the kind of changes you can make to your FAFSA after it’s been processed.

Tax Filers - Alternative Methods

Federal Tax Return

Tax filers may submit a copy of the appropriate FAFSA year Federal Tax Return Form 1040 signed by the tax filer, including all applicable Schedules 1-3. We cannot accept state tax returns or the U.S. Individual Tax Declaration for Electronic Filing (Form 8453).

IRS Tax Return Transcript

In lieu of the signed Federal 1040, tax filers can request the appropriate FAFSA year Tax Return Transcript, free of charge, from the IRS. The IRS regulations limit a tax filer to one request per year. We strongly advise you to send us a copy so you may keep your original. Miami is unable to return the transcript to you. Only use this method if you are unable to use the DDX or submit a signed Federal 1040. There are four ways to request an IRS Tax Return Transcript. Visit the  for more information.

Tax Filers - Amended Tax Returns

1040X

If you have amended your tax return, you must submit your signed Federal 1040X, which will provide the updated information.

In the event that the IRS made changes to your tax return for you and a 1040X form was not completed, or you did not keep a copy, use the IRS Tax Return Transcript steps above to request an “Account Transcript.”

Non-Tax Filers

IRS Non-Filing Letter

An IRS Verification of Nonfiling Letter or other confirmation of nonfiling is only required when verifying income earned from work for a non tax filer who would file a tax return with a tax authority other than the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
