Biography
Jeremy Long, D.M.A., is Professor of Saxophone at 黑料社区. Also a performing artist, Long regularly performs with renowned artists and orchestras in many genres. His performance of Ravel’s Bolero with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra was described as “perfect” by principal clarinetist Michael Rusinek. All About Jazz writes, “his saxophone can be boisterous, beatific, soothing, sly or soulful, and all of these moods and sounds are conjured with direct intent.” Metamorphic is his latest release featuring compelling and diverse works for classical saxophone
His debut recording as a leader, In Suspension (Innova Recordings), garnered acclaim for pushing the boundaries of the traditional organ trio, and was considered for a Grammy nomination for “Best Jazz Instrumental Album.” Included are six originals and two reimagined standards with organist Steven Snyder and drummer Jason Tiemann. Critics describe it as, “angular and complex...with lots of twists and turns” - Jazz Weekly, “strong in all respects” - All About Jazz, and “an incredibly impressive debut release” - Critical Jazz.
Internationally, Long has toured Japan with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, performing in many of the famed concert halls across Japan including Suntory Hall. In 2011, he was a featured soloist with multiple Grammy and Oscar winning film composer A. R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire) in concerts in India and Dubai, with whom he performed for audiences of 40,000. He has also presented performances at the World Saxophone Congress: he performed his own compositions in Strasbourg, France in 2015, he performed In Two Worlds by Morton Subotnick in St. Andrews, Scotland, and premiered Quartet #2 by Bob Mintzer in Montréal, Canada.
As a soloist, he was featured at the 14th International Conference of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles where his performance of Alarcón’s Concertango, with the composer conducting his ensemble from Spain, was described as “virtuosic” - WASBE World. In 2008, Long recorded Sketches for Alto Saxophone and Percussion Ensemble by Philip Parker. He has also been a soloist with the Cincinnati Pops, PsychoAcoustic and Cincinnati Contemporary Orchestras, Michael Feinstein, the Blue Wisp Big Band, and the Cohesion Jazz Ensemble. In addition, he was selected to perform as a soloist on evening concerts at both the 2013 Region 5 North American Saxophone Alliance Conference at BGSU and the 2008 NASA Biennial Conference at the University of South Carolina.
As a chamber musician and multi-instrumentalist, he has performed as principal saxophonist with the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, is the lead alto saxophonist with the Cincinnati Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, has performed in the internationally acclaimed Linton Chamber Music Series with members of the Cincinnati Symphony, and has premiered new works at numerous NASA Biennial conferences. With the saxophone quartet Mega-Sax, he was on the cover of the Saxophone Journal and three recordings for Sea Breeze. Jazz Times called them “one of the best saxophone quartets to be found anywhere. Not only is their sheer technical virtuosity amazing, but they also play authentically and expressively,” and Jazziz writes, “a gutsy tour de force....sassy horn fireworks.”
As an orchestral and jazz saxophonist, he has performed with the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops since 2004, Pittsburgh Symphony and Pops, Dayton Philharmonic, Middletown Symphony, Richmond (IN) Symphony, Blue Ash Montgomery Symphony, Kentucky Symphony, and Lexington Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as the Cincinnati Opera. In addition, he has performed in concert with New York Voices, John Adams, Jimmy Heath, Manhattan Transfer, Ray Charles, Chaka Khan, Freddie Cole, Lew Soloff, Linda Eder, Frank Sinatra Jr., Byron Stripling, Bernadette Peters, Bobby Shew, Wayne Brady, The Temptations, Debbie Boone, and Idina Menzel.
