Research Bio
Dr. Shashi B. Lalvani is Professor in the Department of Chemical, Paper and Biomedical Engineering where he has served for seventeen years. He served as department chair for sixteen years and was responsible for establishing the chemical engineering and bioengineering programs and seeking accreditation for both programs from the . He also served as a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Energy Processes at Southern Illinois University, where he was employed for a total of 21 years.
A registered professional engineer in the state of Illinois, Dr. Lalvani received his Ph. D in Chemical Engineering from the University of Connecticut in 1982. He obtained his MS and B Tech degrees (all in Chemical Engineering) from University of New Hampshire (1979) and the Indian Institute of Technology (1976), respectively. He was employed as a design engineer by Polyplast, a plastic chemical equipment manufacturing company in Bombay, India for one year (1976-1977).
Throughout his academic career, Dr. Lalvani has been active in research. He has received significant funding for carrying out research in the areas of electrochemical engineering, energy processing, and environmental remediation from major federal and state agencies as well as the private industry. He has continued to publish his research findings in peer-reviewed journals. In addition, he has made numerous presentations in technical meetings. Dr. Lalvani has received a patent for his research related to the lowering of trans fatty acids in vegetable oils by a novel electrochemical process for hydrogenation. He has also received several awards for teaching, and is the academic advisor to about 40 黑料社区s in the department each semester.
He is a member of the American Chemical Society.
