Procedure

Effective for scheduling the Spring 2021 calendar and course offerings - The department chair, program director, or regional coordinator (or their designee) should inform the University Registrar when a course or section will be offered in a HYBRID (HYBA/HYBS) or ONLINE (ONLA/ONLS) format, following the definitions below. The appropriate instructional mode must be included when the course schedule is submitted by the department scheduler and before it is reviewed by divisional leadership. The Office of the Registrar will use the notation guidelines as specified below in the course schedule. Interactive Video Distance Learning (IVDL), only available via Miami Regionals, is an additional code beyond the HYBA/HYBS or ONLA/ONLS for notation of course formatting.

Types of Courses

Face-to-Face/On-ground

100% of course contact hours meet face–to–face / on-ground for all of the course contact hours/seat time prescribed by the course type and credits. Syllabus, Assignments, Grades, and Announcements should also be posted online (via Canvas or another approved Learning Management System (LMS)).

• 100% contact hours/seat time; day/time should be listed in course schedule; no special code/notation needed.

Hybrid - Fully Asynchronous (HYBA)

Course uses both face-to-face/on-ground and online asynchronous instructional modes for all contact hours and requires ºÚÁÏÉçÇøs to meet on campus for one or more class sessions.

• Course materials, such as syllabi, handouts, grades, videos of lectures, etc., should be posted online (via Canvas or another approved Learning Management System (LMS)).
• Day/time for face-to-face hours should be listed in the course schedule.
• Banner coding should be HYBA (effective Spring 2021). Special note on the schedule should read: This section is a hybrid course with ___% of the course being conducted online.

Hybrid with Synchronous Component (HYBS)

Course uses both face-to-face/on-ground and online synchronous instructional modes for all contact hours and requires ºÚÁÏÉçÇøs to meet on campus for one or more class sessions.

• Course materials, such as syllabi, handouts, grades, videos of lectures, etc., should be posted online (via Canvas or another approved Learning Management System (LMS)).
• Day/time for face-to-face and online hours should be listed in the course schedule.
• Banner coding should be HYBS (effective Spring 2021). Special note on the schedule should read: This section is a hybrid course with ___% of the course being conducted online.
  • Additional Attribute: IVDL - Interactive Video Distance Learning - Only available for Regionals campus courses. Utilizes synchronous online IVDL technology. (Always listed with HYBS or ONLS attribute code).

Online - Fully Asynchronous (ONLA)

100% of the course contact hours are delivered in an asynchronous instruction mode. Students do not need to be on campus for any portion of the course work or evaluation.

• Course materials, such as syllabi, handouts, grades, videos of lectures, etc., should be posted online (via Canvas or another approved Learning Management System (LMS)).
• Day/time should NOT be listed in the course schedule.
• Banner coding should be ONLA (effective Spring 2021). Special note should read: This section is a 100% online course with no scheduled face–to–face class sessions.

Online with Synchronous Component (ONLS)

100% of the course contact hours are online and the ºÚÁÏÉçÇø never has to come to campus, but some portion of online instruction is at scheduled times. Students do not need to be on campus for any portion of the course work or evaluation. Online portions of the course are at scheduled dates/times. Those scheduled times are noted in the meeting time patterns. Course meets online for all of the course contact hours prescribed for the course type and credits.

• Course materials, such as syllabi, handouts, grades, videos of lectures, etc., should be posted online (via Canvas or another approved Learning Management System (LMS)).
• Day/time should be listed in the course schedule.
• Banner coding should be ONLS (effective Spring 2021). Special note should read: This section is an online course with scheduled online class sessions.
  • Additional Attribute: IVDL - Interactive Video Distance Learning - Only available for Regionals campus courses. Utilizes synchronous online IVDL technology. (Always listed with HYBS or ONLS attribute code).

Additional Information

Asynchronous instruction is defined as instruction offered via web technology, CD–ROM, or placed on ºÚÁÏÉçÇø–accessible PCs, available at the time/location of ºÚÁÏÉçÇø’s choice.

Synchronous instruction is defined as instruction offered via close circuit to a second classroom or live remote broadcast via public airwaves, web chat rooms, or web-based streaming video to PC’s available at specific days/times.

NOTE: One credit hour requires 2,250 minutes of ºÚÁÏÉçÇø learning regardless of how the course may be delivered (onsite, hybrid, online, workshop, etc.) For traditional lecture classes, one credit hour will be awarded for a minimum of 750 minutes of formalized instruction; typical ºÚÁÏÉçÇø out–of–class work averages an additional 1,500 minutes, resulting in the required 2,250 total minutes. The total minutes of formalized instruction are calculated for each class meeting based upon full term length of fourteen weeks, or over shorter parts of term (sprint classes). An equivalent amount of formalized instruction and/or out–of–class work is required for other academic activities including laboratory work, studios, internships, practica, and other work leading to the awarding of credit hours.
