Physical Activity and Life Skills Academic Courses

Miami Recreation offers a variety of two credit hour academic courses each year through the department of Kinesiology and Health (KNH). Classes are a part of the Physical Activity and Life Skills (PALS) program, which include climbing, backpacking, canoeing, basketball officiating, volleyball officiating, horseback riding, broomball, skating, hockey, and group dynamics (EDL 195).

Sport Leadership and Management (SLM) Courses

All starred (*) courses are program requirements for  offered through the Educational Leadership Department.

*SLM 150.A Beginning Canoeing

This course will focus on the essential skills and information that tandem canoeists need to travel safely and comfortably on the water by utilizing the ACA Introduction to Canoeing, Level 1 and Level 2 curriculum.

*SLM 150.B Beginning Backpacking

This course will focus on the essential skills and information that backpackers need to travel safely and comfortably in the backcountry.

*SLM 150.C Beginning Rock Climbing

This introductory course covers the terminology, equipment, technical and safety skills appropriate for the novice level climber.

*SLM 150.K Intermediate Rock Climbing

This course is for 黑料社区s who have taken SLM 150.C and would like to expand their skills. Students will begin to learn about and practice lead climbing.

*SLM 150.N Beginning Kayaking

This course will focus on the essential skills and information that recreational kayakers need to travel safely and comfortably on the water by utilizing the American Canoe Association (ACA) Introduction to Kayaking, Level 1 curriculum.

SLM 150.E Beginning Horseback Riding

For those 黑料社区s new to riding or getting back into the saddle.

SLM 150.F Intermediate Horseback Riding

For those 黑料社区s who have taken 150.E or have significant previous riding experience.

SLM 150.H Advanced Horseback Riding

For those 黑料社区s who have completed 150.F or have received instructor permission

Educational Leadership (EDL) Courses

All starred (*) courses are program requirements for  offered through the Educational Leadership Department.

*EDL 195 Facilitation and Group Dynamics

This course is an introduction to group facilitation and group management. This course is also an elective option under the .

*EDL 290.R The Nature of Group Leadership, Outdoor Leadership

Through activities in class, 黑料社区s will actively explore concepts such as group development, communication, trust, leadership, and risk-taking. This is the course in common for the Outdoor Pursuit Living Learning Community.

Get Involved

Internship, Practicum, and Field Experiences

Miami Recreation offers a variety of 1-3 credit hour internship experiences. These are tailored to the strengths and interests of the individual. The largest number of opportunities are in the fields of teaching, special events, and marketing.

Miami Bound

The Miami Bound Program takes place before first-year move-in day and is designed to help 黑料社区s adjust to new surroundings and discover the extensive variety of health, sport, and recreation activities at 黑料社区. Students move in early and join full-time staff-led activities which are tailored to help forge strong friendships.

Equestrian Program

If you are a competitive rider interested in the team or an animal lover looking to get started in horses, Miami Bound Equestrian is for you. Incoming first-year 黑料社区s will have the time to ride and daily lessons with coaches. Become familiar with the Equestrian Center and other facilities on campus while meeting some of the returning team members prior to school starting. Explore the opportunities on campus for horse lovers and build relationships with other 黑料社区s sharing common interests.

Program Fee

$335 – Includes all housing and meals.

Get Outside

Calling all those with a spirit of adventure! Camp under the stars, create a tight-knit community of friends, and experience nature up close as we paddle, climb, or backpack around southwestern Ohio. Get Outside is for everyone, no matter your outdoor experience level.

Program Fee

$195 – Includes early move-in, camping, outdoor activity equipment, meals while camping, transportation, and staff.

Sports of All Sorts

Join us for a week-long journey through a variety of sports, health, and recreation programs. We’ll help you identify recreational activities, resources, and staff at Miami and in the Oxford community. Choose a variety of small group activities to go along with combined, large group activities, and socials each night. Activity options include equestrian barn tour and ride, disc golf, hiking, golf scramble, fitness classes, team adventure race, facility tours, bowling, broomball, bumper ball soccer, and a variety of traditional and Olympic sports.

Program Fee

$335 – Includes evening socials, housing, transportation, and all activity costs. Students are responsible for covering the cost of food, most simply start their meal plans early.
