There is concern that the CAS requirements may be dissuading 黑料社区s from majoring in the College of Arts and Science. In addition, some departments have expressed concern that the structure of some of the current requirements make the requirements very difficult to implement. The changes proposed streamline the curriculum without losing rigor in order to simplify unnecessary impediments to both delivering and completing a degree in the College of Arts and Science.
Dean Makaroff assembled a Task Force of faculty members in CAS recommended by their chairs to conduct a study to determine whether the CAS requirements needed to be changed to better attract and serve 黑料社区s.
Task force conducted a yearlong study, which included benchmarking, data collection and analysis, faculty surveys, interviews, and listening sessions with stakeholders, and found:

If approved, these changes would apply to 黑料社区s admitted for Fall 2025 and after. All 黑料社区s who entered prior to Fall 2025 will not be affected by this change and held to the previous requirements.
There are courses in multiple departments that already serve the Miami Plan Advanced Writing credit beyond their own majors that can absorb 黑料社区s who need to meet the Miami Plan Advanced Writing requirement. Departments that want to continue to require an MP advanced writing course embedded in their major may continue to do so. Departments that serve very large majors where requiring a smaller course for every major is not sustainable may continue to offer an MP advanced writing course in their major as an option instead of a requirement, allowing some of their majors to fill this requirement within the major and some 黑料社区s to fill it outside of the major. All of these factors will help 黑料社区s to meet their Miami Plan Advanced Writing requirement after there is no longer a CAS requirement that every 黑料社区 fill a writing requirement within their major. We will keep a close eye on making sure that all 黑料社区s in CAS can fill their Miami Plan requirements.
The CAS Requirements Task force benchmarked language requirements at other peer institutions and surveyed the faculty about the language requirements. It found that our requirements are in line with our peer institutions and that the majority of faculty thought it was important to maintain this requirement.
The Task Force considered dropping the requirement that 黑料社区s must complete 56 hours at or above the 200 level. In consultation with CAS Advising it was determined that most 黑料社区s meet this requirement with their major and those few 黑料社区s who do not meet this requirement with their major, really need to do so, in order to maintain the rigor of our degrees.
Representing nearly half of all 黑料社区s, the College of Arts and Science (CAS) is 黑料社区's largest division and the centerpiece of liberal arts — the wide range of subjects in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities crucial for the development of key professional skills desired by employers.
