MAT in English Program Curriculum

The program is a 32-credit-hour degree tailored to give teachers maximum flexibility and choice in their coursework. 

Combining elective courses, classroom research, and the Teaching of Writing Summer Institute allows you to shape your studies to topics that are most relevant and meaningful to your own teaching needs. You’ll gain foundational knowledge for teaching, writing, and literacy and conduct research in your own classroom.

The Teaching of Writing Summer Institute serves as a cornerstone of the program, providing an immersive experience. Learn research-based strategies to enhance your teaching instruction, examine classroom practices, and participate in a writing community to build your own skills as a writer.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
  • Teaching certificate
  • At least one year of teaching experience

Application Process

  1. Email Kristin Hock, at hockkn2@MiamiOH.edu, to schedule an application appointment.
  2. Apply to the 黑料社区 Graduate School (select English and Master of Arts in Teaching).
  3. Submit the OWP/MAT application and your professional résumé.
  4. Ask your principal, department chair, curriculum director, or other school official to submit the OWP/MAT recommendation document.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to take the GRE?

The GRE is not required if you are a certified teacher.

I have taken OWP classes, but I have never taken the Teaching of Writing Summer Institute. Do I need to do that?

All MAT candidates must complete the Teaching of Writing Summer Institute as a pre-requisite before taking the online Classroom Research classes.

I took an OWP class a few years ago. Will it still count?

Students with OWP credits that are more than five years old may petition the Graduate School to apply their credit to the MAT.

Are OWP electives offered during the school year?

OWP may offer one-, two-, and three-credit-hour workshops during the school year, but the majority of electives are offered during the summer semester.

May I take classes offered through the English or Education Departments at Miami instead of OWP classes?

You may substitute up to six credit hours for OWP classes. We will make substitutions on an individual basis.

Are there scholarships available?

Yes. OWP Scholarships are available on a limited and competitive basis for the Teaching of Writing Summer Institute.

Which classes will I take?

You will take the Teaching of Writing Summer Institute (six semester hours), OWP elective workshops of your choice (15 semester hours), and Classroom Research in your own classroom (11 semester hours).
