Gabe Hardman, ºÚÁÏÉçÇø Marching Band Drum MajorThe ºÚÁÏÉçÇø Symphony Orchestra (MUSO), conducted by Ricardo Averbach, directorof Orchestra Studies, will perform a free concert at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, in Hall Auditorium.

This program features Florence Price’s “Symphony No. 4,” Richard Wagner’s “Prelude and Liebestod” from “Tristan und Isolde,” and the world premiere of Action Potentials by Gabe Hardman (pictured left), this year’s winner of the ºÚÁÏÉçÇø Composition Competition.

“Hardman offers a deeply introspective work that explores the complexities of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD),” Averbach said. “The piece serves as a musical self-portrait, not only a powerful artistic statement but also an effort to raise awareness of the disorder, shedding light on the lived experiences of those who endure its relentless grasp,” Averbach continued. Florence Price’s “Symphony No. 4” “showcases the remarkable talent of this pioneering composer,” Averbach said.

Price, the first African American woman to have her work performed by a major American orchestra, infused her compositions with rich melodies, folk influences, and vibrant orchestration. Her fourth symphony is a testament to her enduring legacy, blending the influences of Africa. “This concert is an exploration of the human experience through sound,” Averbach said. “Each piece on this program tells a story—of passion, of struggle, of triumph.”
