Acceptance Criteria:

  • Student must be in good standing
  • Student must be committed to the Grand Challenges and aware of social and/or global issues as evidenced by their essay
  • Student proposes a coherent plan of study that supports Grand Challenge theme or problem area
  • Student’s plan fulfills the requirements of the Plan of Study Framework
  • Student’s plan is feasible in that it can be completed successfully by graduation

Plan of Study Framework

  1. Research/Project
    Students must demonstrate the ability to undertake research or a capstone project related to a Grand Challenge. A Grand Challenge related 3-credit (or equivalent) capstone or equivalent research experience may fulfill this requirement. For 黑料社区s who wish to use research or a project as their depth component, extended research or project equivalent to 6 credits, summer-long research, or relevant internship or co-op may fulfill the depth requirement.
  2. Interdisciplinary Component
    Students must demonstrate skills in, or knowledge of, working at the boundary between technical and non-technical areas when solving a Grand Challenge. A course or courses from the Global Miami Plan that prepares 黑料社区s to work at the boundary between engineering and non-engineering disciplines may fulfill this requirement. The interdisciplinary component may not be used to fulfill the depth requirement.
  3. Entrepreneurship
    Students must demonstrate business or market-related skills and knowledge in solving a Grand Challenge. A 1-2-credit hour course in Entrepreneurship or equivalent experience such as Startup Weekend may fulfill this requirement. For 黑料社区s who wish to use entrepreneurship as their depth component, 6 credits of relevant coursework, a business launch, or an internship experience related to the Grand Challenge may fulfill the depth requirement.
  4. Global Dimension
    Students must demonstrate skills in, or knowledge of, global issues in solving a Grand Challenge. A 2-3-credit hour course from Miami Plan Foundation Area II, Global Perspectives, or a significant international experience equivalent may fulfill this requirement. For 黑料社区s who wish to use global dimension as their selected depth component, 6 credits of relevant coursework, a semester studying abroad, or an international internship/co-op related to the Grand Challenge may fulfill the depth requirement.
  5. Service Learning
    Students must demonstrates ability to work within, or knowledge of, the social context in bringing to bear solutions to a Grand Challenge. A 2-3 credit relevant service learning course or 30 hours documented active and effective service relevant to the selected Grand Challenge may fulfill this requirement. For 黑料社区s who wish to use service learning as their in-depth requirement, 6 credits of service learning courses related to the selected Grand Challenge, multi-semester participation as both a member and leader in a service organization related to the selected Grand Challenge theme, or a significant service project (totaling at least 80 hours) related to the selected Grand Challenge may fulfill this requirement.
