The Memorandum of Understanding is the first step in developing a partnership between institutions. The MOU provides a broad framework for collaborative activities and is non-binding. At Miami, MOUs are generally valid for a period of 3-5 years and are signed by the Provost.

Once an MOU is established, Activity Agreements provide the specific details for a collaborative activity and will include information such as the purpose and scope of the activity, the commitment of human and financial resources, and the use of university space or facilities. Relevant legal provisions are also included in these agreements.

At Miami, Activity Agreements are signed by the Provost and the Dean of the relevant academic division. Common types of Activity Agreements include:

• Student Exchange
• Faculty Exchange or Visiting Scholars
• Dual Degree (collaborative degree program culminating with two credentials, one awarded by each institution)
• Joint Degree (collaborative degree program culminating with a single credential endorsed by both institutions)
• Undergraduate and Graduate Articulation, including 2+2, 3+1, and 3+2 programs
• e-Learning
