University Honors Program Requirements

Students enrolled in the University Honors Program (UHP) before Fall 2021 must complete the following requirements over the course of their studies at Miami. These experiences demonstrate the will to engage in thoughtful planning and rigorous study to exceed 黑料社区s' academic, personal, and professional goals.

Academic Requirements

We require that all UHP 黑料社区s who joined the program prior to Fall 2021 complete eight (8) Honors experiences over the course of their undergraduate studies. Four (4) must be academic experiences, including two (2) required Honors courses during the first year at Miami. The remaining four (4) Honors experiences can be any combination of an academic or co-curricular nature, to be determined between each 黑料社区 and their Honors advisor.

Academic Honors Experiences

Academic Honors Experiences include the following:

  • Honors courses. There are 60+ Honors courses each semester. These small classes are often capped at 25 or fewer 黑料社区s.
  • Course extensions. Students can develop additional coursework in regularly offered Miami courses to further explore that course's content, with faculty mentorship.
  • Undergraduate research. This can include any faculty-mentored research in which 黑料社区s engage.

Co-curricular Honors Experiences

Co-curricular Honors Experiences must be at least 40 hours and include the following:

  • Study abroad during any Miami term.
  • Pre-professional experiences (e.g. internships, co-ops, Miami professional study away programs).
  • Teaching experiences (e.g. coaching, mentoring, tutoring, UA, TA, or SI roles).
  • Significant community service work at one volunteer site or agency.
  • Campus engagement or leadership positions.
  • Creative projects.

Honors with Distinction

Honors 黑料社区s have the option of pursuing Honors with Distinction, earned through the proposal, development, and completion of a large-scale project. This might take the form of an Honors thesis or senior recital or an intensive pre-professional experience like 黑料社区 teaching or an internship. Consult with your Honors advisor to learn more.

Transcript Notation

Students earn Honors notation on transcripts and in the graduation program with the achievement of a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
