Patrol Staff

The patrol staff is responsible for uniformed patrol of the campus. Duties include responding to emergency and non-emergency calls for service, taking and investigating criminal offense reports, enforcing all traffic and criminal statutes under Ohio law by arresting and/or citing those found violating them, emphasizing crime prevention, and engaging in active patrol to deter and detect criminal activity. Patrol officers are assigned to one of three shifts, or watches, which are supervised by sergeants. The department's patrol deployment is specifically structured to maximize the number of officers on duty during the busiest hours of darkness (9:30 p.m. - 3:30 a.m.). Officers patrol on foot, in cars, and on bikes in order to optimize the public's access to officers, and the officers' ability to detect and deter crime. Officers are sometimes deployed in plain clothes to target specific types of offenses (liquor violations, drug abuse, etc.). All three shifts begin with roll call, during which the sergeant makes duty assignments and announces any specific activities scheduled for the day. Current reports and cases are reviewed, and any special instructions are issued before officers leave to check their equipment and begin regular patrol.

First Watch

First watch officers begin their tour of duty at 7:30 in the morning, normally with 3 patrol officers and a sergeant on duty. Activity on a typical day usually includes traffic enforcement, money escorts, vehicle lock-outs, taking and filing offense reports, medical emergencies, and other calls for service. In terms of directed activity (responding to calls from the public), first watch is usually the busiest shift. They also take more offense reports than the other watches.

Second Watch

Second watch officers report for duty at 5:30 p.m., normally with 4 patrol officers and a sergeant on duty. Activity for a typical evening usually includes traffic enforcement, extensive patrol, often on foot, responding to calls-in-progress (disputes, break-ins, etc.), taking and filing offense reports, and initiating arrests/citations for criminal violations. Second watch usually tops the other watches in terms of initiated activity (incidents officers discover while on patrol).

Third Watch

Third watch officers report for duty at 9:30 p.m., normally with 2 patrol officers and a sergeant. Since half of their shift overlaps with second watch, activity for third watch officers is much the same as seconds, including traffic enforcement, extensive patrol, responding to calls in progress (disputes, break-ins, etc.), taking and filing offense reports, and initiating arrests/citations for criminal violations. Most of the department's DUI arrests are made during third watch.
