Dr. Mark Williams, Chair

Dr. Mark Williams (Miami, 1988) is a Family Physician currently serving as Center Medical Director for Oak Street Health, a value based health care company. After graduating from 黑料社区 with a BA in Zoology, he earned his MD from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1992. He did a residency in Family Medicine at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. He was in private practice for 15 years and held a number of medical staff leadership positions. In 2010, he became Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Atrium Medical Center and then in 2013 held the same position at Miami Valley Hospital. He returned to practice in 2016 and also served as Market Lead Physician until starting his current role in 2021. His areas of interest include physician leadership, leadership coaching, and physician wellness.

 


 

Dr. Kyle Hogarth - Vice Chair

Dr. Kyle Hogarth (Miami, 1994) is Professor of Medicine and Director of Bronchoscopy and Minimally Invasive Diagnostics at the University of Chicago. He is an expert in pulmonary diseases focusing on lung cancer diagnostics and therapeutics as well the genetic form of emphysema: Alpha One Antitrypsin Deficiency. His research focuses on improving the tools and techniques used to diagnose, manage, and treat lung cancer and airways diseases. He is an authority on techniques such as Bronchial Thermoplasty for asthma and IntraBronchial Valves for air leaks and emphysema management and Robotic endoscopes for peripheral bronchoscopy. He graduated from Miami in 1994 with a B.A. in Chemistry, Microbiology, and Zoology. He received his M.D. from Case Western Reserve University in 1998.

 


 

Dr. David DeLaet, Chair Emeritus

Dr. David DeLaet (Miami, 1991) is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology and went on to attend the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He then completed a combined Internal Medicine/Pediatric residency at the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, becoming certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics in 1999. Following his residency, he was a clinical fellow in General Internal Medicine at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, earning a Master of Public Health degree from the Columbia University School of Public Health in 2001. He was a member of the faculty at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine until 2005, after which time he joined the faculty at Mount Sinai. He has served clinically as a primary care provider for patients of all ages. His academic focus has been on the transition of adolescents and young adults with special health care needs from the pediatric-oriented to the adult-oriented medical home, and he has served on a national professional society task force addressing this issue and has many publications devoted to this topic. He and his wife Rebecca live in Cincinnati and have two children, Jack and Allison.

 


 

Dr. Anthony Antonoplos

Dr. Anthony Antonoplos (Miami, 1998) graduated with a B.A. in Microbiology. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 2002. He completed his Radiology residency at the Cleveland Clinic in 2007 and an MRI Fellowship at The Ohio State University in 2008. Following completion of his fellowship, he entered Radiology private practice in Cincinnati. He is a former president of Northeast Radiology Inc, and currently is the Chairman of the Department of Radiology at Bethesda North Hospital and a member of the Board of Directors for Tristate Imaging Medical Group.

 


 

Dr. Julia Behrend

Dr. Julia Behrend (Miami, 2017) graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, and minors in Spanish and Portuguese. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in 2021. Currently, she is a pediatrics resident at Northwestern University Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, IL. 

 


 

Dr. James Bertz

Dr. James Bertz (Miami, 1956) is an Oral Maxillofacial surgeon in Scottsdale, AZ. After Jim graduated from Miami with a degree in zoology, he obtained a master's degree in anatomy and a dental degree from Ohio State University. Following training in oral/maxillofacial surgery at Ohio State University and Parkland Memorial Hospital/University of Texas (Dallas), he had fellowship training in London and Zurich. He then received a medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine and surgery training at University of Texas M.D. Anderson and Memorial Hermann Hospitals in Houston. Jim has been an examiner, board member, and President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS).

Jim was a Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical School Houston.  He served as President of the medical school Faculty Senate as well as Assistant Dean for Students and Academic Affairs.  He later served as Assistant Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs for the University of Texas system which included 6 nursing schools, M.D. Anderson Hospital, University of Texas Houston Graduate School, 4 medical schools, 2 dental schools, and a Chest Hospital in Tyler, Texas.  Later he was an Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at University of Texas Medical School, Houston.

He received the Bishop Award from 黑料社区 and Significant Sig Award from the Sigma Chi Fraternity for his work in third world countries. He and his wife Sandy are a Miami Merger.

 


 

Dr. Samantha Cooney

Dr. Samantha Cooney (Miami, 2020) graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology, and with minors in Neuroscience and Marketing. At Miami, she worked in a research laboratory with Dr. Ann Rypstra. She received her Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in 2024. As a medical 黑料社区, she received the William Goldfarb Education Award, Lewis Gordon and Bernice Gordon-Cohen Memorial Awards, Professor Vincent A. Jablon Memorial Award, Buckholz/Vogler Surgical Scholarship Award, and was a member of the Pi Delta National Podiatric Honors Society and the Stirling-Harford DiPrimio-Honorary Anatomic Society. Currently, she is a resident physician in a podiatric medicine and surgical residency at Norton Audubon Hospital in Louisville, KY. Samantha intends to pursue a surgical fellowship upon completion of her residency.  

 


 

Ms. Karey Davis

Ms. Karey Davis graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor of Science and Butler University with a second Bachelor of Science in Physician Assistant studies. She is a Physician Assistant / Associate as well as a Certified / Licensed Athletic Trainer, employed for Henry Community Health in New Castle, IN as well as TriHealth at McCullough Hyde in Oxford.  She is currently involved in the PA Foundation's Nutrition Outreach Fellowship and speaks on nutrition for Abbott. Her current practice includes Physiatry / Orthopedics as well as Urgent Care (PRN). Previous experience includes Spine Surgery, Orthopedics, Emergency Medicine, Rheumatology, and Family Medicine. She has been involved with 黑料社区's Health Careers Week for the last few years as well as precepting 黑料社区s who are going into medicine. She also serves as a guest speaker at Butler University's PA program and precepts PA 黑料社区s who are in their clinical rotation year.

Outside of work, Karey says "I am married to an amazing husband and we have 4 active teenagers who keep us busy with all of their activities. I am passionate about serving, love talking about nutrition, and keep busy with our own family activities."

 


 

Dr. Dan Dolan

Dr. Dan Dolan (Miami, 2012) graduated with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 2016. Currently, he is completing his General Surgery residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago after completing two years of clinical research in thoracic surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA, and completing an MPH from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He will be pursuing a career in academic Thoracic Surgery.

 

 


 

Dr. Roger Friedman

Dr. Roger Friedman (Miami, 1974) graduated from 黑料社区 and went on to Ohio State University Medical School. He did a three-year residency with Nationwide Children’s Hospital and then a two-year fellowship in allergy at the University of Pittsburgh and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He returned to Columbus where he begin his practice for the next thirty-three years. In January 2015, Dr. Friedman became a partner and vice president of Ohio ENT and Allergy Physicians. Dr. Friedman has served on many boards and received numerous awards, including The Lifetime Achievement Award from Ohio Start Medical School (2007), Career Contribution Award Nationwide Children’s Hospital (2008), and the Ohio State University College of Medicine Alumni Service Award (2014). Dr. Friedman and his wife of forty years, Marilyn Bondy Friedman, have had 2 daughters graduate from 黑料社区, Michelle Friedman Winograd (2003) and Abbie Friedman Devendra (2006). Roger and Marilyn hope their 5 grandchildren - Julia, Olivia, Gabe, Addy, and Jack, will all go to Miami. Dr. Friedman presently serves on 7 Covid tasks forces and is anxiously awaiting the end of the pandemic.

 


 

Dr. Jessica Walpole Giffey

Dr. Jessica Walpole Giffey(Miami, 2015) graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in Biochemistry, a B.S. in Zoology, and a minor in Neuroscience. She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 2019. Currently, she is a psychiatry resident at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and plans to pursue a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry. In addition to residency, Dr. Walpole is pursuing a Master of Arts in Educational Studies, with a specialization in Biomedical Education, to prepare her for a career in academic medicine as a clinician-educator. She is involved in medical education research in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at Ohio State and continues to be involved at The Ohio State University College of Medicine in various capacities. 

 


 

Dr. M. Christopher Griffith

Dr. Marcus “Chris” Griffith (Miami, 1985), specializes in psychiatry and obesity medicine. He is Diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Obesity Medicine. Dr. Griffith is employed by The Southeastern Permanente Medical Group in Atlanta, Georgia, and is a Clinical Assistant Professor at both Morehouse and Emory University Schools of Medicine.

Dr. Griffith has given lectures on the local, state, and national levels. He has delivered presentations for The National Football League, Turner Broadcasting Corporation, Georgia Institute of Technology, National Medical Association, American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and multiple academic institutions. Additionally, he has provided expert opinion to The Food and Drug Administration, the United States House of Representatives, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Dr. Griffith has been the recipient of several local and national community service awards and has been involved with the Big Brothers and Big Sister’s organization since 1998 Additionally, he and his wife, Dr. Jeana Griffith, completed a book, titled: The Tale of Two Athletes-The Story of Jumper and The Thumper, which is a true, inspirational story based upon a lifelong friendship that was turned into a children’s book to combat the obesity epidemic. A description of Dr. Griffith’s program can be found as a review article in The Permanente Journal, Summer- 2016.

In 2020, Dr. Griffith helped to create a minority, health professionals mentoring program through a collaborative effort of Kaiser Permanente Stonecrest, Dekalb Arabia Mountain High School, and the City of Stonecrest. In 2021 he was appointed to the Executive Board of the Dekalb NAACP and chairs the Health Committee.

 


 

Mr. Nicholas Henkel

Mr. Nicholas Henkel (Miami, 2016), graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. in Zoology as well as a Co-Major in Neuroscience.   He minored in Spanish.   He is currently matriculated at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences in the dual-degree, M.D.-Ph.D. Program.   He will graduate in 2025.   At Miami, he worked in the Laboratory of Dr. Lori Isaacson, Ph.D. which inspired a career as a physician-scientist. >  Nicholas has served in various leadership positions at the University of Toledo College of Medicine including Medical Student Council, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education’s Independent Student Analysis, multiple Curriculum Reform Committees, the Student Interest Group in Neurology, and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.   He is an active mentor for the American Physician Scientist Association’s Undergraduate Mentorship Program.   Nicholas intends to pursue a career in medical education and academic medicine as a neurointensivist/neurointerventionalist-neuroscientist.

 


 

Dr. Richard Hirsh

Dr. Richard Hirsh (Miami, 1965) joined the medical staff in the Department of Radiology at Akron City Hospital/Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio. During his 37 years of radiology group practice, he performed general diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, and breast imaging. Over the course of several years, his duties included division chief of diagnostic radiology and acting chief of nuclear medicine. He retired in 2010. He received his bachelor's degree in Zoology. He went on to earn his Doctor of Medicine degree from New York Medical College. Dr. Hirsh completed his residency in Diagnostic Radiology in 1973 at Metropolitan Hospital Center in New York, NY. From 1975 through his retirement in 2010 he held the academic rank of Assistant Professor of Radiology at Northeast Ohio Medical University. In 1996 he founded , a nonprofit organization whose goal is to organize international medical projects focusing on mammography and breast-cancer training missions to underserved regions in developing countries. Over the past 28 years, he has completed over 40 mission projects all around the world. In acknowledgment of these humanitarian achievements, he has received numerous awards and recognitions including the Bishop Medal for Humanitarianism from The Alumni Association of 黑料社区. Dick and his wife, Marcia, Miami '66, a "Miami Merger", celebrated 50 years of marriage in June 2017. Their older daughter, Deborah, is also a Miami graduate, Class of 1992.

 


 

Dr. Richard KuntzDr. Richard Kuntz

Dr. Richard Kuntz (Miami, 1979) is Senior Vice President, Chief Medical and Scientific Officer of Medtronic, and serves as a member of the Company’s Executive Committee. In this role, Kuntz oversees the company’s medical affairs, health policy and reimbursement, clinical research activities, and corporate technology. He also served as Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Chief of the Division of Clinical Biometrics, and an interventional cardiologist in the division of cardiovascular diseases at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. Dr. Kuntz graduated from 黑料社区 and received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed his residency and chief residency in internal medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and then completed fellowships in cardiovascular diseases and interventional cardiology at the Beth Israel Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston. Kuntz received his Master’s of Science in biostatistics from the Harvard School of Public Health.

 


 

Mrs. Kelly S. and Mr. Thomas H. Jr. Mallory

Mrs. Kelly Mallory and Mr. Thomas Mallory Jr., are the wife and son of the late Dr. Thomas Mallory (Miami, 1961). Dr. Mallory and his wife Kelly provided the gift that established the Mallory-Wilson Center back in 1994.

 


 

Dr. Mark Mendeszoon

Dr. Mark Mendeszoon, DPM (Miami, 1987) is a multi-board certified podiatrist who treats all surgical and non-surgical conditions of the leg, ankle, and foot in both adults and children. He specializes in trauma, sports medicine, diabetic foot and ankle conditions and reconstructive foot and ankle surgery, including Total Ankle Joint Replacement Surgery.

Dr. Mendeszoon graduated from the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine with honors and completed his surgical training at Harvard Medical School-New England Deaconess Hospital-Joslin Diabetes Center. He then completed an orthopedic lower extremity, ankle & foot surgical fellowship. He continues to be active academically as the director of the Advanced Foot And Ankle Fellowship with University Hospitals Richmond Medical Center, clinical professor at Ohio University Heritage medical school, and sports medicine director at Kent State University School of Podiatric Medicine. He has been appointed assistant professor at Iowa State University. He lectures nationally and internationally, has been published in several medical journals, and is a contributor to many health and wellness magazines including Men’s Health.

As an athlete, Dr. Mendeszoon received All-State honors in track and field during high school and was a four-year scholarship 黑料社区-athlete at 黑料社区 where he competed in the 400 hurdles, 800 meters, and relays. He continued to compete post-collegiately for several years until he began his coaching career at Stony Brook University and the University of Pennsylvania. He currently coaches at Chardon High School and is the Director of the Maple Leaf Track Club. Dr. Mendeszoon is a consultant with the University of Akron Track & Field Team as well as Spire Institute’s Track & Field program. In addition, he serves as a team physician for several high schools in Geauga County. Known as “Doc” to his athletes and the running community, Dr. Mendeszoon has worked with athletes of all ages including All-State, State Champions, All-Americans, National Champions, and Olympians.

Dr. Mendeszoon resides in Chardon with his wife Kristen and twins, Myles and Marijke. Always the athlete, he is still an active runner and enjoys traveling and reading. He has fulfilled his dream of establishing a specialty shop dedicated to runners, walkers, and athletes of all levels. Achilles Running Shop is the only known physician-owned specialty running store in the country. His stores are located in Willoughby, Ohio, and Erie, Pennsylvania.

 


 

Dr. Michael MooreDr. Michael Moore

Dr. Michael Moore (Miami, 1998) grew up in Oxford, the son of Fuller Moore, a Professor of Architecture at Miami. He earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Chemistry while competing as a varsity high jumper and being active in Biochemistry research in the lab of Dr. Chris Makaroff. Following his undergraduate education, Michael went to medical school at UCLA and subsequently completed his Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Residency at Harvard. Dr. Moore then did a clinical fellowship in head and neck cancer and reconstructive surgery at The University of Washington in Seattle, before joining the faculty at Indiana University in Indianapolis. He currently serves as the Arilla Spence DeVault Professor and Vice-Chair of Academic Affairs for the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and also is the Medical Director for the IUH Joe & Shelly Schwarz Cancer Center. In addition to his clinical passions, Dr. Moore is also active in teaching as well as International medical outreach, having traveled to Kenya on multiple occasions to work with local providers there on care related to head and neck tumors. He now lives in Northern Indianapolis and has a wife and a 9-year-old son.

 


 

Dr. Jennifer NicholasDr. Jennifer Nicholas

Dr. Jennifer Nicholas (Miami, 1991) is an  Associate Professor of Radiology and Pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and is the Division Chief of Pediatric Radiology and Vice-Chair for Education for the Department of Radiology at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center.  She graduated from Miami with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Psychology with minors in Latin American Studies and Family Studies.  She spent several years after graduation teaching in various capacities, including: bilingual elementary school, English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), Spanish (middle school through college-level), Chemistry, Biology, and science and math to middle school ESOL 黑料社区s.  Her love of languages coupled with her desire to better understand the cognitive science behind language acquisition and bilingualism led her to pursue an interdisciplinary master's degree in Spanish and Linguistics from the University of Colorado, Boulder, which she completed in 1994. 

Dr. Nicholas's quest to optimally utilize her language skills led her to medical school (Duke University School of Medicine, 2004) during which time she also completed a degree through the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Gillings School of Global Public Health (MHA, 2003).  She completed her internship in her hometown at Akron General Hospital, her Diagnostic Radiology residency in Chicago at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and her fellowship in Pediatric Radiology at Cincinnati Children's. She is board-certified in Diagnostic Radiology, Pediatric Radiology, and Public Health. Dr. Nicholas was faculty at Northwestern University (Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago) and Washington University School of Medicine (Saint Louis Children's Hospital) before returning to Northeastern Ohio to assume her leadership roles at University Hospitals in 2020. 

Dr. Nicholas has combined her language skills with her medical specialty through global health work in Honduras, Nicaragua, Mexico, Ecuador, Kenya, Rwanda, Nigeria, and Haiti.  Her research interests include imaging of child development, particularly as it relates to nutritional status in resource-limited settings, and she has received funding for research projects in Ecuador and Haiti.  She is also committed to integrating medical technology into medical education, particularly in the global health setting.  To that end,  she is completing a Master of Education through the University of Cincinnati with a focus on Curriculum and Instruction in Medical Education, which brings her life experiences full circle.  While she was at Miami she was involved in the Honors Program, the Scholar-Leader Program, MUSF, Alpha Omicron Pi, and the Office of Learning Assistance as a peer adviser and study skills tutor.
