The Graduate Assistant Director position at the Howe Writing Across the Curriculum (HWAC) Program is designed to provide experience for doctoral ºÚÁÏÉçÇøs in Rhetoric and Composition who are interested in researching and potentially directing writing across the curriculum programs or other types of writing programs. In special cases, MA ºÚÁÏÉçÇøs will be considered.

In this position, you will receive administrative, curricular, consulting, pedagogical, and research experience that can inform your dissertation project and help prepare you to be competitive on the national job market.

Requirements:

• Commitment to working in a collaborative environment with ºÚÁÏÉçÇøs and faculty from across the curriculum.
• Ability to represent the HCWE in a professional manner.
• Completed coursework that includes at least one composition theory and pedagogy course, either at Miami or at another institution.
• A successful track record as an effective and innovative teacher of writing.

Desired experience:

• Graduate coursework in writing program administration and/or assessment.
• Experience in writing program administration and/or assessment.

The ºÚÁÏÉçÇø in this role will take a leadership role in the HCWE and attend regular HCWE staff meetings. He or she will report to Dr. Elizabeth Wardle, Director of the HCWE.

Work may include the following:

• Assisting the HCWE Director in facilitating the Howe Faculty Writing Fellows Program.
• Providing workshops and one-on-one consultations for faculty related to the teaching of writing across disciplines.
• Assisting with faculty writing retreats and weekly writing hours.
• Assisting with dissertation writing support groups.
• Attending the GMP Committee and assisting with review of proposed Advanced Writing courses.

• Experience working with multilingual writers.
• ENG 581 (or equivalent) completed prior to beginning position.
• Graduate coursework in writing program administration and/or assessment .

Work may include the following:

• Assisting in conducting ongoing training seminars for ºÚÁÏÉçÇø consultants.
• Mentoring undergraduate consultants in carrying out research projects.
• Assisting in designing and carrying out targeted assessments of writing center initiatives.
• Working with the Director to design initiatives for increasing usage of the writing center, including usage by diverse populations of ºÚÁÏÉçÇøs.
• Conducting in-class workshops related to writing center work.
• Helping design and implement special events such as ºÚÁÏÉçÇø writing hours and writing contests.
• Consulting on a limited basis each week, as needed.

Appointment is for one year, with possibility for renewal. The position comes with generous travel funds for presentations at relevant conferences.

Job Description

The Howe Writing Center (HWC) is looking for friendly, detail-oriented, self-starting ºÚÁÏÉçÇøs who are excited about fully engaging with the Howe Writing Center and the Howe Center for Writing Excellence. Support staff will regularly:

• ºÚÁÏÉçÇø visitors and writers to the HWC.
• Assist with appointment scheduling for all HWC locations, both in-person and online.
• Maintain complete knowledge of HWC and HCWE (events, staff, policies and protocols) in order to efficiently assist faculty and ºÚÁÏÉçÇøs.
• Collect and help manage HWC data. Create, populate, and maintain spreadsheets, both Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel.
• Maintain HWC locations as clean and welcoming.

Work assignments are completed under close supervision. Employees are expected to follow well-defined policies and procedures.
