President Gregory Crawford's Statement on Election Day
November 3, 2020
November 3, 2020
To the Miami community,
Election Day is a significant day for our democracy. Free and fair elections are our opportunity to have a say in our future. By voting and choosing our leaders, we are honoring the democratic process that defines America – and we are honoring all of those who came before us and gave their lives for the freedom to vote. Whether you voted early, by mail, or intend to vote today, thank you for your participation in this election.
I would be remiss if I did not encourage you to continue to follow public safety measures today, whether you intend to vote in person or gather in small groups to watch the returns. Positive COVID-19 cases have reached their highest point across both Ohio and the nation. The virus continues to circulate in our community. Please continue to wear your masks, maintain six feet of physical distance, and limit your gathering sizes. Remember, if you contract COVID-19 in these next few days, you may find yourself in quarantine or isolation over the Thanksgiving holiday.
This Election Day could be different than others in recent history. It is possible that we won’t have results of major elections tonight, or for several days or weeks. To help voters understand the process, the Pew Research Center has created an excellent resource with . Becoming familiar with the next steps after the election can help quell speculation and allow you to better navigate uncertain times.
Unity is an ideal that lies at the heart of our Code of Love and Honor. As Miamians, we strive to find our common bonds. In political matters, we don’t have to agree on candidates or ballot issues, but we can agree that civil dialogue and mutual respect are essential foundations for a free and fair society. Let’s demonstrate that conviction as we interact with others on our campuses and in our communities.
We are fortunate to have a vibrant and engaged campus community that cares about the future of our community, state, and nation. Thank you for your participation in the political process.
Love and Honor,
Greg Crawford
